It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael "Mike" William Wertenberger Sr., who left this world peacefully from natural causes, on August 18, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on August 13, 1946, in South Bend, Indiana, Mike was a resident of Bowling Green, Kentucky at the time of his death.
Mike graduated from Central High School in South Bend, IN, and went on to establish a career in insurance sales. He worked for John Hancock, Anthem of Indiana, and then later opened his own insurance agency where he specialized in group insurance. His dedication to his work and his clients was a testament to his strong character and work ethic. He enjoyed refinishing antique wood furniture, rabbit hunting, and yard work in his spare time. He was also an avid Notre Dame fan.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Wertenberger and Fredrecia Wertenberger; daughter, Monique Kurtz; son-in-law, Matthew Kurtz; brother, Tom Wertenberger; sister-in-law, Dana Wertenberger.
Mike leaves behind his cherished children, son, Michael Wertenberger Jr; daughter, Melissa Dillard; son, Marc Wertenberger; Grandchildren, Amber Hyde (Tony), Sydnee Dillard, Ashley Carter (John Robert), McKenzie Dillard, Abigail Kurtz, Braden Kurtz, Molly Wertenberger; great-grandchildren, Chyler Hyde, Mason Hyde, Arizona Hyde; Sisters, Sharon Hall (Jim), Roberta Ross, Karen Robison (Mike); nephew, Brenton Ross (Lila); nieces, Natalie Rickman (Anthony), Lisa Amy (Eric); and several great-nieces and nephews, who will carry forward his legacy of love and resilience.
A graveside service will be held to honor Mike's life and contributions. Family and friends are invited to gather at Southlawn Cemetery, located at 61430 Old U.S. 31 South, South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 10:00 AM ET, where he will be laid to rest. In this time of mourning, we reflect upon Mike's kindness, sense of humor, dedication, and the love he shared with those around him. He will be greatly missed.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the many caregivers who have taken such great care of Mike in his final years.
